When a heat pump is the right call
The strongest case is a home running electric-resistance heat: baseboard, wall units, or an electric furnace. A heat pump delivers two to four units of heat for every unit of electricity, so you are often cutting the heating portion of the electric bill by more than half while gaining central cooling you never had.
Gas-furnace homes convert for a different reason: adding AC anyway costs nearly as much as a heat pump, and the heat pump lets you leave the gas furnace as backup for the coldest snaps. You get summer cooling, lower shoulder-season heating cost, and rebate eligibility in one project.

What heat pump installation costs and what drives it
A ducted heat pump conversion in Puget Sound generally runs in the mid four figures to the low five figures installed, before rebates and tax credits. Ductless systems vary widely by the number of indoor heads. The honest answer is that the range is wide because the drivers below move the number more than the brand does.
Rebates and the 25C tax credit frequently take thousands off the net cost, which is why the pre-rebate sticker is a poor comparison tool. We quote the installed price and the estimated net after incentives so you can see both.

Heat pump installation requires a mechanical permit in every Washington jurisdiction, and electrical work requires its own permit. We pull the permits and schedule the inspection. Do heat pumps actually work in Western Washington winters?
Yes. Our lowland winters are mild but long, which is the exact profile heat pumps are built for. A cold-climate model holds rated heating capacity into the low teens, well below the temperatures most Puget Sound homes ever see, and backup heat covers the rare colder night.
Should I keep my gas furnace as backup?
Often yes. Pairing a heat pump with your existing gas furnace as backup, called a dual-fuel setup, gives you efficient heat-pump operation most of the year and gas capacity for the coldest snaps. We will tell you whether that makes sense for your home and rates.
How much can rebates and the tax credit save me?

Ducted or ductless for my house?
If you have good existing ductwork, a ducted heat pump is usually the cleanest path. If you heat with baseboard or wall units and have no ducts, a ductless system almost always wins on cost and efficiency. We recommend based on your home, not on what we would rather sell.
Will a heat pump lower my energy bills?
For homes on electric-resistance heat, the savings are large because a heat pump delivers several units of heat per unit of electricity. For gas homes the winter savings are smaller, but you gain cooling and rebate eligibility that straight AC does not qualify for.
Do I need an electrical panel upgrade?
Sometimes. A heat pump needs a dedicated circuit, and older panels may not have capacity, especially if you are also adding electric backup heat. We check your panel during the estimate and include any required electrical work in the written quote.
